Acne is an exceptionally common skin disorder that is most prevalent during adolescence – the teen years. Teen acne is so common that some degree of acne is normal in teens. Acne is considered a disease when it causes physical or mental scarring, pain, or social discomfort. The disease of acne is more common than many people realize. There are two main approaches to acne. The most effective acne treatment is isotretinoin. This medication is a naturally occurring body chemical that typically cures acne in at least 80% of patients after the usual five month course of treatment. Acne can also be managed conventionally with topical medications and/or oral antibiotics. This method often provides good control of acne breakouts and can be a fine choice for those with milder adolescent acne. With acne, one size does not fit all.
